Connecting the adapter

Where is the OBD port in my car

The adapter plugs into the OBD2 diagnostic port. Almost every car built since the 2000s has one: always inside the cabin and usually under the steering wheel. No tools needed.

What it looks like

A plastic trapezoid about the width of a matchbox, with two rows of eight holes. The wide side is at the top. The adapter only fits one way round, so you can’t get it wrong.

Where to look

Sit in the driver’s seat and check these places in turn — the most common first. It’s dark under the dashboard: use your phone’s torch.

  1. Under the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel — by the driver’s left knee.

  2. Right under the steering wheel — beneath the dashboard, below the steering column.

  3. Under the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel — above the accelerator, by your right knee.

  4. In the lower dashboard to the left of the steering wheel, behind a lid.

  5. In the middle of the centre console, below the radio.

  6. Low between the front seats — by the gear lever, handbrake or armrest.

If the port is covered

It is often behind a cover: a small hinged lid, the fuse-box lid, an ashtray or a storage tray. These usually come off by hand — pull them towards you. Don’t force anything: if a cover won’t give, the port is most likely somewhere else. Where a cover has to be unscrewed, the steps for your car say so.

  • There’s no cover — you’ll see it straight away.

  • It may have a soft cap on — just pull it off.

  • It’s behind a small hinged lid — flip it open with a finger.

  • It’s behind a removable cover — pull it towards you; it’s held by clips.

  • It’s behind an ashtray or a storage tray — pull it out or open it.

How to plug the adapter in

  1. Push the adapter into the port, wide side up, all the way in. No force needed: if it won’t go in, turn it over.
  2. Switch on the ignition or start the car — a light on the adapter comes on.
  3. Open Inerka and tap “Connect the adapter” on the map — the app will guide you from there.
